Nonaka-Hill is proud to present ARCADIA, an exhibition of new paintings by Ulala Imai, to inaugurate our new gallery space located in the Gion district of Kyoto, Japan.

For her second solo exhibition with Nonaka-Hill, Ulala Imai embraces an illustrative term connected to Classical idealism. Imai’s ARCADIA honors the garden of her suburban Tokyo studio as a site of genesis, wonder and bucolic satisfaction, though not detached from eventualities of an evermore complex world:

I enjoy the view of the garden at different times of the day… glittering with sparkling morning dew…the contrasting beauty of the garden's landscaping, glowing gold in the afternoon sun…blue plants illuminated by car headlights and moonlight. I even stare at the plants blowing in the squall from the car. Every day I see extreme news that reminds me that there is no eternal utopia in this world. We live in a moment where anything can happen at any time, and I want to reflect that in my work, knowing that one day this place will become a lost Arcadia. 

Ulala Imai is renowned for her observational paintings of food, stuffed animals and popular toy characters, situated either in familiar domestic settings or varied landscapes (gardens, parks, forests or the Japanese coastline), depicted either alone or as ensemble tableaux. While Imai’s works pay homage to centuries old painting genres - the still-life, the heroic portrait, the bucolic landscape - rather than serving these (mostly) Western, art historical tropes, she upends the visual narrative through dramatic shifts of scale and subtle suggestion. In her paintings, Imai often pushes nature morte into a hybrid subgenre of her own making; less concerned with vanitas and its regular preoccupation with death and transience, but rather breathing life into static objects. Through her mastery of medium and technique, Imai’s works often appear luminescent, animating humble plates of food and well-worn playthings into a living theater, lionizing the imagery of her everyday life. The resultant paintings take on themes of proxied self-portraiture and portraiture, family and romantic relationships, harrowing adventure and existential bliss.


Ulala Imai was born in Kanagawa prefecture, Japan in 1982, where she continues to live and work. Ulala Imai’s artworks are included in the permanent collections of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), Los Angeles, CA; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco, CA; Dallas Museum of Art, Dallas, TX; The High Museum, Atlanta, GA; Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami, FL; Booth School of Business, University of Chicago, Chicago, IL, USA; He Art Museum, Guangdong Province, China,

Nonaka-Hill Kyoto joins the historic and cultural hub of Gion having transformed a kyo-machiya (京町家), a typical Japanese wooden townhouse which traditionally functioned as both a residence and place of business, into a two level exhibition space. Located just east of the Kamo River, down a narrow pathway behind antiques and incense shops, and directly across from the Foundation for the Preservation of Katayama Family Nohgaku and Kyomai, Nonaka Hill lies inconspicuously behind a traditional facade with an interior space radically reconfigured by Shinsuke Kato and Masaki Yokoyama.

Founded by Rodney and Takayoshi Nonaka-Hill in 2018, Nonaka-Hill Los Angeles has endeavored to keep “Japan” as a connective presence in each of its sixty exhibitions to date. Working with emerging artists, established artists, and artist estates from Japan and its diaspora, the Kyoto branch of the gallery continues this mission, while also engaging artists more broadly to create singular exhibitions with “Japan” as a setting.

ノナカ・ヒルは、京都・東山区祇園の新門前通に新しくギャラリーを構えました。
その柿落としとして今井麗の新作展「ARCADIA」を開催いたします。

この度の展覧会は、ノナカ・ヒルにおける今井の2度目の個展となります。本展では、今井は古典的な観念論と深く結びついた絵画的用語を用いています。「ARCADIA」は、彼女の東京郊外にあるスタジオの庭を、起源、驚嘆、そして田園詩的な充足の場として讃えていますが、複雑化する世界の現実から切り離されているわけではありません。

時間差の庭の眺めを楽しんでいる。朝露キラめくグリッターガーデン。西陽が黄金色に輝くコントラスト強な庭の造形美。車のヘッドライトと月夜が照らす青い植物達。スコールの中を吹き荒む植物たちの動きを車の中からずっと凝視していたりもした。この世には永遠のユートピアなどないと思い知らされるような過激なニュースを日々目する。いつ何が起きてもおかしくない状況に晒されている日常の中を私たちも生きている筈なのだが、いつかはここも失われたアルカディアになるのだろうと思いつつ、それもまた制作に反映させていきたい。

今井麗は、食べ物、ぬいぐるみ、そして人気のおもちゃのキャラクターを観察して描く作品で知られています。これらは身近な家庭環境、または庭、公園、森、日本の海岸線など様々な風景の中に配置され、単独または複数の物が集まった場面として描かれています。今井の作品は、静物画や英雄的な肖像画、牧歌的な風景画など、何世紀にも亘る絵画のジャンルに敬意を表しつつも、(主に)西洋美術史的な比喩表現に奉仕するのではなく、スケールの劇的な変化や微妙な暗示によって、視覚的な物語を覆しています。

彼女の絵画は、しばしば博物画*を独自のハイブリッドなサブジャンルに押し広げます。死や儚さに対する通常の関心であるヴァニタス*よりも、むしろ静的なオブジェに命を吹き込むことに重点を置いています。彼女のメディウムと技法における卓越した技術によって、今井の作品はしばしば発光しているかのように見え、質素な食器や使い古された遊び道具を生き生きとした劇場のように変化させ、日常生活のイメージを特別なものにしています。その結果として生じる絵画は、自己の代理的な肖像や肖像画、家族や恋愛関係、過酷な冒険や存在の至福といったテーマを帯びるようになります。

*博物画とは、動植物、鉱物などの観察対象を詳細に記録するために描かれる絵
*ヴァニタスとは、人生の空しさの寓意を表す静物画のジャンルのひとつ

今井麗は1982年神奈川県生まれ。今井麗の作品は、これまでロサンゼルスカウンティー美術館(LACMA、ロサンゼルス、カリフォルニア州)、サンフランシスコ近代美術館(サンフランシスコ、カリフォルニア州)、ダラス美術館(ダラス、テキサス州)、ハイ美術館(アトランタ、ジョージア州)、インスティテュート・オブ・コンテンポラリー・アート(マイアミ、フロリダ州)、シカゴ大学ブース・スクール・オブ・ビジネス(シカゴ、イリノイ州、アメリカ)、和美術館(広東省、中国)スペースK(ソウル、韓国)、国立国際美術館(大阪)のパーマネントコレクションに収蔵されている。


ノナカ・ヒル京都は、祇園の北縁の新門前通に位置し、典型的な木造の町家を2階建ての展示スペースに改装しました。新門前通りは知恩院の門前町として発展したため骨董店や古美術商が多く並び、真向かいには片山家能楽・京舞保存財団があります。ノナカ・ヒルは、その路地奥にひっそりと佇んでおり、内部空間は、加藤駿介と横山将基によって再構成されています。

2018年にロドニー・ノナカ・ヒルとタカヨシ・ノナカ・ヒルによって設立されたノナカ・ヒル・ロサンゼルスは、これまでに60回に及ぶ展覧会を開催してきました。その中で「日本」を繋がりのある存在として位置付けてきました。日本やそのディアスポラ出身の新進アーティスト、実績あるアーティスト、アーティスト・エステートを紹介しながら、ノナカ・ヒル京都は、この使命を引き継ぐと同時に、より広い範囲のアーティストと協力して日本を舞台とした特別な展覧会を作り上げていきます。
