Kentaro Kawabata

Born in 1976 in Saitama, Japan; lives and works in Gifu. Over a career spanning a quarter-century since completing his studies at the Tajimi City Pottery Design and Technical Center in 2000, Kentaro Kawabata has pushed the boundaries of contemporary ceramic art, earning recognition through such honors as the Kamoda Shoji Award at the Mashiko Pottery Exhibition (2004), the Paramita Museum Ceramic Award (2007), and the prestigious Japan Ceramic Society Award (2024).

While hand-built porcelain has emerged as a distinct genre over the past decade, Kawabata pushes it into entirely new territory by incorporating fragments of glass directly into hand-formed clay bodies before glazing and firing, alongside the use of industrial slag. Through the intense heat of the kiln, these elements undergo dynamic melting, warping, and unexpected chemical transformations. The resulting works evoke biological internal organs or cellular structures, possessing a visceral, raw, and sometimes grotesque organic energy. In series such as Knot Face, seed, soos, batista, and Spoon, Kawabata incorporates discarded industrial fragments and material waste, capturing processes of growth, decay, and cyclical material transformation.

Defying the conventional rules of ceramics—where handbuilding with notoriously delicate porcelain is rarely attempted—Kawabata confronts the absolute limits of his materials through sheer handcraft and the complex integration of glass and mixed media, forging an uncompromising and visceral sculptural vocabulary.
