Rando Aso, Earthscape

Opening: Saturday, September 12, 3- 6 p.m

Nonaka-Hill Kyoto is pleased to present Earthscape, an exhibition of new work by Rando Aso, on view through October 24.

Born in Nara in 1983, Aso is currently based in Minokamo, Gifu. Earthscape is an attempt to make visible the landscapes latent within clay through the act of firing.

The exhibition brings together four bodies of work: Threshold Trace, Earthscape, Sphere of the Earth, and Intimate Space. These are accompanied by recordings made during Aso’s working process. Normally unheard and concealed behind the finished works, these sounds drift through the gallery, creating a space in which the transformation of clay, and the time embedded in that process, can be experienced.

This approach to landscape through sound was developed in collaboration with listude, whose practice centers on creating spaces for listening through polyhedral omnidirectional speakers. Since 2007, listude has organized IEUTAGE in Nara, bringing sound and food together as a way of connecting people and spaces through listening. The group is currently developing a new project in the forests of Hokuto, Yamanashi.

Aso initially worked with electric kilns, but at a time when he was questioning what it meant for him to make ceramics, he encountered open firing. Smoke, smell, sound, flame, heat—the experience of being physically present as clay transformed through fire gave him a new, visceral understanding of firing. Since then, he has chosen methods that involve his body directly throughout the making process. Rather than a return to something primitive, his practice is an ongoing negotiation with forces that cannot be fully controlled: fire, clay, and gravity. Through this process, he has refined that relationship into a distinct formal language.

Installed across the walls of the first and second floors, Earthscape is a series that treats firing itself as a form-making process. Clay is spread to a thickness of approximately one millimeter, fired into thin ceramic sheets, and joined to form a continuous plane. The resulting material holds seemingly contradictory qualities: hardness and fragility, weight and lightness, while retaining traces of time spent in the fire. Through firing, clay that initially had no fixed form acquires an edge and a surface. As these individual fragments come together, a landscape of earth begins to emerge.

On the first floor, Sphere of the Earth takes the form of a clay sphere. When clay reaches high temperatures during firing, it gradually begins to glow. After repeatedly witnessing this phenomenon, Aso came to imagine a “mass of light” behind the material presence of clay. Sphere of the Earth was conceived as a material form in which this image could reside.

The glass room displays works from the Intimate Space series. The closed boxes suggest interior spaces that can neither be seen nor touched. Hidden from view, these interiors are left to the memories and sensations of each viewer, quietly directing attention inward.

The exhibition traces the landscapes Aso finds between clay and fire.
